Boston Celebrates Birthright Israel and Honors Barry Shrage
The Boston Jewish community gathered on May 6 for an evening of celebration, inspiration, and commitment to the Jewish future. The event was held to honor Barry Shrage, whose decades of visionary leadership at Combined Jewish Philanthropies helped shape Boston's Jewish community and champion Birthright Israel from its earliest days — legendary philanthropist Dr. Miriam Adelson presented the award alongside Taglit CEO Gidi Mark.
National Board Member Sara Aronson kicked off the pre-reception that featured remarks by Robert Kraft.
Event co-chairs Linda and Michael Frieze, Jessica and Chuck Myers, and Marissa and Zach Wainwright welcomed a room of over 350 passionate supporters who heard from Birthright Israel Foundation President & CEO Elias Saratovsky, Board Chair Michael Rashes, and event honoree Barry Shrage.
Alumni Adela Cojab, Aaron Ganz, Boston Cabinet Chair Dara Grossman, Zach Wainwright, and Mifgash participant Ayana Reiner each shared deeply personal stories about how their Birthright Israel trips transformed their lives and set them on a path of Jewish leadership.
A compelling fireside conversation between Adela Cojab and civil rights attorney Alyza D. Lewin explored why a strong Jewish identity is critical to understanding one’s rights in the face of growing antisemitism.
In the spirit of Barry Shrage's legacy, Dena and Michael Rashes announced a $500,000 matching gift, ensuring every new and increased commitment made in the room would be doubled. We are deeply grateful to our co-chairs, our Cabinet, our host committee, and every guest who gave so generously to ensure the next generation finds their way to Israel and to each other.
"There was so much energy in the room, and everyone left the event with an appreciation for the crucial nature of Birthright’s mission," Michael Rashes said. "We are deeply honored to be part of this community and are inspired by the generosity of everyone who attended. We would like to extend a special thanks to Barry for his decades of service, leadership, mentorship, and friendship."
